Manchester United have emerged as the leading contenders to sign Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo, despite Tottenham Hotspur holding internal discussions about a potential move, according to Fabrizio Romano on the GIVEMESPORT Market Madness podcast.
Mbeumo’s future has been a major talking point this summer, especially following Thomas Frank’s appointment as Tottenham’s head coach. The Cameroonian was a key figure under Frank at Brentford, making it natural for the new Spurs boss to consider a reunion.
While both Manchester United and Tottenham admire Mbeumo, it appears United have taken the lead in the pursuit. Romano reports that although Spurs have discussed the player internally—largely due to Frank’s influence—it’s United who are actively negotiating with Brentford and maintaining regular contact with the player’s camp.
Romano explained, “It’s clear Thomas Frank values Mbeumo, and Tottenham considered him as soon as Frank signed. But my understanding is Manchester United are in more advanced talks with Brentford. They’re in contact almost daily, trying to reach a deal, although it’s never easy to negotiate with clubs like Brentford.”
He added that Mbeumo is open to joining United, which puts the Red Devils in a strong position, though the final hurdle remains agreeing on a transfer fee. Despite their current lead, United are pushing to complete the deal swiftly to prevent other clubs from entering the race and complicating matters.
Should the move go through, Mbeumo would fit well into Rúben Amorim’s system at Old Trafford, likely playing in one of the attacking midfield roles behind the striker. However, he would also be a natural fit at Spurs under Frank, who knows how to get the best out of him.
