Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has urged the club to act quickly or risk serious embarrassment in their pursuit of Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo.
While United did land Matheus Cunha from Wolves for £62.5 million, their summer transfer activity has since stalled.
The long-running chase for Mbeumo has dragged on for weeks, with no deal reached as Brentford reportedly continue to adjust their demands—making negotiations increasingly tricky. Despite this, United remain keen on securing the 24-year-old before the transfer window closes.
Speaking on his Rio Ferdinand Presents YouTube channel, the former centre-back voiced his frustration at the club’s hesitation.
“Man United have to meet Brentford’s valuation. If they let this drag on and miss out, it’ll be embarrassing,” Ferdinand said. “This story’s been going on too long now. If they don’t get it done and haven’t lined up a proper alternative, that’s a huge misstep.”
He also noted the lack of serious backup options being linked, warning that United could find themselves without a viable attacking solution.
“I’ll say it again—he ticks the boxes. He’s quick, scores goals, knows the league, and would slot right in. United need to move.”
Mbeumo, who netted 9 goals and added 6 assists last season, helped Brentford remain competitive even with Ivan Toney sidelined for much of the campaign.
His profile suits new manager Rúben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system perfectly, with his speed, directness, and left-footed presence from the right offering ideal balance to a front line that includes Cunha and Joshua Zirkzee.
However, failing to sign Mbeumo could raise questions, especially among fans eager to see reinforcements before the season kicks off. His arrival could also impact others in the squad—particularly Amad Diallo, who may be shifted to a wing-back role, potentially stunting his attacking influence.
Beyond Diallo, United’s options out wide are thin. Youngsters Shea Lacey and Bendito Mantato show promise, but relying on them in a demanding season may be risky for Amorim.
With time running out, Manchester United must make a decisive move. If Mbeumo is their priority target, the club’s leadership—under Amorim and INEOS—needs to prove they can close deals swiftly and efficiently. The outcome of this transfer pursuit could be an early litmus test for the club’s new direction.
