A recent report reveals that David de Gea turned down an offer to join a Premier League side during the January transfer window.
The veteran Spanish goalkeeper, who parted ways with Manchester United last summer after 12 years at the club, remains a free agent. Although he’s been linked to a potential move to Saudi Arabia, no deal has yet materialized.
Nottingham Forest made a move to sign De Gea, hoping to bring him in for the remainder of the season to provide regular game time. However, the 33-year-old declined the short-term proposal, opting instead to keep his options open.
Alongside De Gea, Forest also expressed interest in Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale, who has lost his starting spot to David Raya. Ultimately, the club turned to Matz Sels, completing a £5.1 million deadline-day transfer from Strasbourg. The Belgian signed a three-and-a-half-year contract.
With Sels now in the squad, Forest’s goalkeeping options include Matt Turner, Wayne Hennessey, and Odysseas Vlachodimos.
Despite rejecting Forest’s approach, De Gea remains eligible to sign for a new club as a free agent, even outside the transfer window.
During his Manchester United career, De Gea made 545 appearances across all competitions and earned 45 caps for Spain, solidifying his reputation as one of the top keepers of his generation. His experience and pedigree continue to make him an attractive option for clubs in need of a proven shot-stopper.
