Manchester United have revealed their plans for young defender Diego Leon, who is expected to officially join the club in July, according to Manchester World.
While United are focused on signing players who can make an immediate impact on the first team, they also prioritize recruiting top young talents worldwide, aiming to sign players with high potential and future resale value.
Ayden Heaven and Chido Obi-Martin are great examples, both acquired from Arsenal for low fees and already close to breaking into the senior squad.
Plan for Diego Leon at Man Utd
He has already completed his medical.
Manchester World reports that United will officially sign Leon from Paraguayan club Cerro Porteño next month. The club agreed on the deal back in January but waited until he turned 18. He is set to sign a five-year contract for a fee that could rise to £7 million.
Described as “lightning-quick” by Transfermarkt, Leon has completed his medical at Old Trafford. United intend to evaluate him during pre-season rather than immediately loaning him out.
A loan move isn’t ruled out, but for now, Leon will be assessed over the coming months and might even join Ruben Amorim’s senior squad for their pre-season tour in the U.S.
Given his age and lack of senior experience, it’s unlikely Leon will become a regular first-team player next season. However, the next few months will give United a chance to gauge his development and determine the best path forward in his career.
