Here we go: Manchester United welcome their new striker as he completes his medical and agrees to a five-year deal to join the Reds today – congratulations to Man United fans!
According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Manchester United are currently in talks with Aston Villa to sign goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez.
After signing Andre Onana from Inter Milan for a hefty fee a couple of years ago, he struggled with errors during his debut season.
United’s defense overall was poor in the 2023/24 campaign, and despite hopes for improvement, Onana continued to look uncertain last season. As a result, many fans have lost confidence in him.
Now, Fichajes reports that United are considering replacing Onana and see Martínez as a strong candidate.
Negotiations with Aston Villa have already begun, with Unai Emery’s side reportedly willing to let Martínez go for around £40 million. The Argentine goalkeeper is also said to be open to a move to Old Trafford.
Aston Villa face potential financial regulation issues after failing to qualify for the Champions League, meaning they need to sell key players like Martínez, Morgan Rogers, and Ollie Watkins to balance their books.
Martínez has proven his quality on the biggest stage, helping Argentina win the 2022 World Cup and two Copa America titles.
He’s regarded as one of the world’s top goalkeepers and an excellent penalty stopper. However, his performances for Villa have been less consistent, with occasional errors.
Given that Martínez will turn 33 later this year, spending £40 million on him might not be the best long-term investment.
Manchester United definitely need a new goalkeeper, but opting for a younger player might be wiser. It will be interesting to see if Ruben Amorim’s team ultimately decides to bring Martínez in to strengthen their defense this transfer window.
